What causes low back pain?

Stress

Physical Stresses can include big accidents such as a car accident, a sports injury, or a slip and fall. It can also include daily repetitive activities such as bad posture, sitting all day, or sleeping in the wrong position.

Emotional Stresses such as work, school, financial difficulties, peer pressure, divorce, or the death of a loved one (just to name a few) can have a major impact on our physical health and cause low back pain.

Nutritional Stresses such as unhealthy foods, chemicals, air pollution, or contaminated water prevents proper healing from happening and can be a major factor in low back pain.

How do these stresses lead to low back pain?

Let’s take a car accident, for example. When there is an injury to the spine, it can cause the spine to shift out of place. When the spine shifts out of place, it can put pressure on the nerves coming out of the spinal cord between the vertebrae. Pressure on the nerves causes nerve interference which leads to a breakdown in communication between the brain and the rest of the body.  This is known as a subluxation.

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is spinal misalignment that puts pressure on a nerve causing a breakdown in communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Here’s how that often happens:

  • Nerve interference: An injury causes spinal misalignment that puts pressure on a nerve leading to a breakdown in communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
  • Swelling & Inflammation: The body sends fluid to an injured area in order aid in the healing process. This is known as swelling and inflammation and while it can be beneficial short term, it can have damaging effects long-term. Inflammation can cause pain and tenderness.
  • Reduced Range of Motion: When the spine is stuck out of place due to muscle spasm and inflammation, there is often a significant reduction in range of motion
  • Poor Posture: When one area of the spine is misaligned, other parts of the spine have to compensate. These compensations can cause the spine to get twisted up leading to spinal imbalance and poor posture.
  • Degeneration: When a spinal injury goes unresolved for months, years, or even decades, scar tissue builds up and degeneration occurs. Many people who experience back pain are really just experiencing the effects of an unresolved injury that was given years and decades to degenerate.

How are subluxations corrected?

Subluxations are corrected by gently realigning the spine and removing interference from the nervous system.

This restores communication between the brain and the rest of the body and reduces the accompanying pain, muscle spasm, swelling & inflammation, and degeneration.

How do I find out if I have a subluxation?
